Getting a Mental Workout

1. Describe your experience. Did you find it beneficial? Difficult? Why or why not? Would you recommend this to others? Why or why not? I liked the sounds of water in the background, I found it to be soothing and allow me to focus a little better on the task. The female voice made this one a little easier to get into than the previous one’s we have listened to. I found this one to be more beneficial than the others and would recommend it to others. I really liked this one. However, I need to pick a better time during the day and will try it again when I can really devote my full self and attention to the exercise. 2. What is the concept of "mental workout"? What does the research indicate are the proven benefits of a mental workout? How can you implement mental workouts to foster your psychological health? Just as an athlete or student trains or studies and works towards becoming an Olympian or a Doctor, we to have to engage in daily practice in order for us to evolve our psychospiritual life and access its capabilities and resources, even if for only an hour a day. If we cease to train, just like with athletes, there is a decrease in our abilities and conditioning. By using comtemplative practices such as loving kindness and the subtle mind, we can achieve this workout.

  1. I agree that the woman's voice made to a better experience.I also have to find a better time to listen. I think that maybe listening to it at night before bed( once the kids are in bed) would be more beneficial and could help for a more restful sleep

  2. I too found the woman's voice better than the male the previous weeks. And I love the sound of the water too. I think James had a good suggestion about doing it at night but I'm also wondering if it would be beneficial first thing in the morning? You should still be very relaxed from the night and it may help to already be in a gentle state.

    1. I find that early morning meditation is best for me to start my day. At night, I am more reflective and the subtle mind exercise seems more appropriate. Thoughts go in and out of mi head like the surf, I am learning to observe them and not just react.

  3. Great blog post, I glad you were able to get into this exercise. Although the woman's voice was laid back and calm. The timing in which I have been trying to do it has been off due to illness. Maybe like James said in his feedback listening to at bed time would be best.

  4. I agree this exercise could be very beneficial if we found the right time of day to do it. That's my problem, I don't have a right time of day. You are right about the mental workout. The more you do it, the better you will become at it and the better your mind and body will react to it. Once you stop the benefits decrease too. Great post

  5. oh! Well that is good you enjoyed this exercise. I did not enjoy it much. Yes, I agree that the female voice is much more soothing but I was just too easily distracted. maybe I need to try it again and this time not while I am stressed out.
